Which apps need a messaging feature the most?

An app does not have to be social media oriented in order to have a messaging feature. There are many instances when it comes in handy. And sometimes, it’s put there to make an otherwise vanilla app more fun.

We’ve previously mentioned Venmo for this reason. It’s a money transfer app first and foremost. But by adding a social feed, Venmo set itself apart from PayPal.

You would think that since people are so private about their finances, this wouldn’t work. But people have a lot of fun with it. This goes to show that a feature like this could work on just about any platform.

As a thought exercise, we thought about some apps that could benefit the most from a messaging feature. Here are a few we came up with.

Apps That Could Use a Messaging Feature

  • Google Maps – Have you ever texted friends about wanting to go to a new bar on Friday? What’s usually the follow-up? They ask you the address. And then you run off to Google Maps to copy and paste it for them. What if you could go on Google Maps, click on a specific venue, and start a private conversation within the app about it? Isn’t this more effective than pinning or copy and pasting?
  • News Apps – Most major news outlets have apps at this point. The Washington Post, New York Times, Buzzfeed, etc. And it’s been long known that the comment section for any article is a minefield. Many people choose not to engage because of how wild it gets. But that doesn’t mean they don’t want to talk about what they just read. By adding a Direct Message feature similar to Instagram, friends can discuss the article privately. Without interference from people looking to derail any peaceful conversation.
  • Spotify – This runs the risk of stepping on iTunes’ toes. And since a vast majority of people are on their phones when using Spotify, they are not going to want to read lengthy user album reviews. But it can be done well if they don’t focus on public posts. Just allow messages between users. Compared to other music streaming apps, Spotify is tailor made this. Their brand is all about user-friendliness, and they already have Facebook connectivity. Providing a more social aspect for friends to discuss songs seems like a perfectly Spotify feature.
